Medical Education Experience of Central South University Shared at CUMEC

From March 10 to 11, the first Medical Education Conference of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUMEC) was held in Prince of Wales Hospital. More than 260 medical education participants from 15 different areas of the world were invited to attend the conference and had in-depth discussions focusing on medical professionalism, bioethics, and medical education evaluation. The teaching team of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, delivered 2 academic reports in English, introducing Xiangya’s experience in training the professionalism of medical students and the PBL teaching method, which received much attention from participating experts.

This conference is the first international conference held by CUHK in the field of medical humanities, and many well-known international experts in this field attended it. Experts from British Medical Association, University of Oxford, Columbia University in the City of New York, University of Sydney, Monash University, Osaka University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, National Taipei University, Central South University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China Medical University, etc. gathered to discuss medical education reform in the new era and new situation, including how to avoid potential medical risks and hazards, strength communication between medical staff and patients and humanistic care for patients and train the professionalism of medical students.

Five teachers from Xiangya Hospital, including Dr. Chang Shi, Deputy Dean of Xiangya School of Medicine, Dr. Wu Jing, Director of Teaching and Research Section of Internal Medicine, Dr. Li Yaping, Deputy Director of Medical Education Department, Dr. Li Xinhua of the Department of Gastroenterology and Dr. Xia Ke of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine were invited to attend this conference. Li Xinhua and Li Yaping gave a report in English respectively at the conference, which was highly appraised by the participants. It’s learned that this was the first time Xiangya Hospital’s teaching staff spoke in English at an international medical education conference.

Prof. Li Yaping made a speech on China’s medical student professionalism evaluation system, introducing how to establish the medical student professionalism evaluation system in line with international medical education standard and with Chinese characteristics and the results of evaluating the professional value, attitude, behavior, ethics, and communication skills of the medical students from 4 colleges and universities of traditional Chinese medicine and 7 colleges and universities of western medicine in China with this evaluation system.

Prof. Li Xinhua introduced the application of PBL in the teaching of gastroenterology. The improved PBL teaching method combined with CBL and the guidance of clinical experts solves the problem of lack of systematic knowledge architecture and group consistency between theoretical study and clinical practice in the teaching of hemorrhage of the digestive tract. It better stimulates students’interest and enthusiasm, achieves better teaching effect and effectively improves students’performance.

During the conference, the members of Xiangya’s teaching team not only communicated face to face with peers from all over the world, but also met and talked with the 8-year program medical students from XYSM studying at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Director Wu Jing said that Xiangya Hospital has always had excellent teaching traditions. The senior professors pass on their teaching experience to new teachers in medical education while new teachers further carry forward the advantages of Xiangya in medical education. At present, in addition to routine teaching, Xiangya Hospital integrates medical humanistic care and professionalism into daily teaching. In this process, it has not only trained a large number of excellent medical talents, but also reserved educational talents.

“Xiangya has made many new reforms and attempts in the teaching work. In the future we will further raise teachers’consciousness to conduct medical education related research, and summarize and exchange teaching experience in a timely and active manner to expand the influence of Xiangya in the field of medical education.” Dr. Chang Shi said.

It’s learned that, as one of the earliest medical teaching institutions founded by the graduates of the world-renowned Yale University in China, Xiangya has been famous for its rigorous academic attitude and excellent style of study at home and abroad. In recent years, under the correct leadership of Central South University, Xiangya Hospital has deepened the determination to carry out the reform of medical education continuously, clarified the strategic policy of integrating with internationally advanced medical education, and achieved fruitful results. Xiangya Hospital has changed from the previous experiential education model to the research and learning type teaching model. The teaching reform of the 8-year program led by Xiangya Hospital has been thought highly of by Central South University which has developed the 2016 edition of the 8-year medical student training program with it as the blueprint. In addition, Xiangya took the lead to carry out microteaching in Hunan Province to improve teachers’training mode. It conducted the “Teachers Open Day” activity for the first time to carry forward the spirit of Xiangya through the teacher-student communication. The Clinical Skills Training Center has cooperated with Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER) of University of Pittsburgh in providing the simulation teaching course iSIM.Xiangya Clinical Skills Training Textbookhas been officially published and printed four times a year, with a sales volume of more than 10,000 copies.
