The 2023 Asian Heart Valve China Forum and the Second Congress of the Committee of Heart Valve Diseases, Chinese Research Hospital Association (CRHA) were held in Chengdu, Sichuan from December 1 to 3, 2023. It was jointly hosted by the Asian Academy of Heart Valve Disease (AAHVD) China Chapter and the Committee of Heart Valve Diseases, CRHA, and organized by West China Hospital of Sichuan University. Professor Liu Liming, director of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and director of the Heart Valve Disease Specialty Center of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, was elected as Chairman of AAHVD China Chapter and Chairman of the Second Congress of the Committee of Heart Valve Diseases, CRHA. The Second Xiangya Hospital has also become the affiliated institution of AAHVD China Chapter and the Committee of Heart Valve Diseases, CRHA.

The conference was held against the backdrop of the centenary of valve surgery worldwide, marking a glorious journey of technological innovation and the integration of human wisdom in the field of valve treatment. Distinguished experts from France, Canada, the United States, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, and other countries, along with nearly 200 Chinese cardiovascular surgeons delivered lectures either in person or online. A total of over 500 experts from the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department and related fields attended in person, while more than 30,000 individuals participated in online academic exchanges and watched the live-streaming surgery.

AAHVD China Chapter is currently the largest and most influential committee in the field of valve surgery in China. In this conference, 11 esteemed experts from prominent cardiac centers in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Hangzhou, and Hong Kong as well as experts from Fuwai Hospital and Anzhen Hospital were elected as vice chairpersons. Professor Zhao Yuan from the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of Second Xiangya Hospital was appointed as a standing member of the committee and also assumed deputy secretary general.

In recent years, with the strong support of the hospital, Director Liu Liming has led the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery in achieving a comprehensive breakthrough in the diagnosis and treatment of valve diseases. This includes precise valve replacement and repair through various methods including open heart technique, minimally invasive surgery, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, transapical and peripheral vascular intervention. They has also overcome several technical difficulties, including complex cases of valve diseases, valve diseases combined with refractory atrial fibrillation, and hybrid procedures of valve diseases and other complicated conditions. In addition, they have successfully finished the first Cox-Maze IV surgery for a patient with dextrocardia suffering atrial fibrillation in the world, and taken the lead in adopting more than 10 advanced surgical techniques. Professor Liu Liming's appointment as Chairman of the AAHVD China Chapter is a recognition of his personal accomplishments and underscores the department's prominent role in the field of heart valve surgery and atrial fibrillation surgery in China.
